"Little House on the Prairie, the Musical" Cast visits Habitat Hillsborough

Cast members from "Little House on the Prairie, the Musical" joined Habitat volunteers and staff on Wednesday, March 3rd, to add color to the life of the Martin Home on Durham Street in Tampa.  They did a great job of painting the front exterior, as well as some interior painting!  What a wonderful group of people!

Wall Raising This Saturday
Home Represents Security to Lopez Family
The Lopez family will celebrate a new year and a new beginning at the Wall Raising of their new home on 22nd Avenue in Tampa this Saturday, January 16, 2010 at 9 a.m.

The family has not had a home to call their own for many years.  Abigail and her sons, Juan and David, grew weary of moving from one apartment to another.  She had applied to the Habitat program several years ago and was denied.  After working through some financial issues Abigail decided to apply a second time...and was approved!
Building a home with Habitat Hillsborough represents security to Abigail and her family.  Juan and David look forward to planting citrus trees in the back yard and playing basketball and having rooms of their own.  "This new home," said Abigail, "will allow them to continue to grow and develop into outstanding young men. "

Publix Super Markets Charities and the Habitat Fund for Humanity are co-sponsors of the home.  "I would like to say thank you [to the home sponsors]," replied Abigail.  "You are making a huge difference in our lives.  We are very grateful for this moment - a new start in a new year."

"Home for Holidays" Dedication Brings "Snow" to Plant City

It “snowed” in Plant City Saturday, December 12th, as the Harris Family came “Home for the Holidays” during the dedication of their new home.  Habitat Hillsborough volunteers, board members, and staff braved the “wintery” weather to join in the celebration.

Board Chair Rob Martin presented the keys to the home and a welcome mat while other volunteers presented “Symbols of Life” to the family.  The Harris Family joins more than 130 Hillsborough County families who have partnered with Habitat since 1987.

WARRICK DUNN SURPRISES HARRIS FAMILY
Holiday cheer was in the air Tuesday, December 8th as Warrick Dunn surprised the Harris Family with $5,000 down payment assistance, furniture and just about everything needed to begin living in his new home.

"This started as flat concrete, and this is what we have now — a home for me and my daughter," Harris said at the presentation Tuesday afternoon.  "I still have a long way to go, but this is going to make it a lot easier."

The Warrick Dunn Foundation chooses single-parent families each year for their Home for the Holidays program in the Tampa Bay area, Tallahassee, Atlanta, and Baton Rouge.  The Harris family was the 90th recipient of the Home for the Holidays program.  Thank you to the Warrick Dunn Foundation for working with Habitat Hillsborough to bless this family!

Habitat volunteers worked feverishly Saturday, October 31st, to finish the homes built with the Thompson and Nussa families for the 2nd Annual Suzie Q Blitz Build for Breast Cancer Awareness month.  Both homes were built in one week by volunteers from various organizations such as Citi, Regency Centers, Moffitt, Habitat USF, University of Tampa, the Bay Area Apartment Association and more.

During the Dedication Ceremonies, Ralph Jackson, Affiliate CEO-Executive Director, and Rob Martin, Habitat Hillsborough Board Chairman, thanked Citi for the partial home sponsorship, as well as Regency Centers for an event sponsorship and other sponsors who, along with Habitat volunteers, helped “Build Hope for the Cure”.  Because of donations from volunteers and other donors, Habitat Hillsborough was able to donate $3,000 to Moffitt Cancer Center to further breast cancer research.

A very special day during the Suzie Q Blitz Build was Survivor’s Day on Friday, October 30th.  Breast cancer survivors were honored with red roses at lunch.  The "Courage & Hope" tent, along with the Survivor’s Wall and Wall of Honor highlighted and honored those who have survived the fight with against breast cancer and those who fought the disease valiantly.
