Habitat Hillsborough :  Every Day is Earth Day
by Lauren Kintner

At Habitat Hillsborough every day is Earth Day.  The Habitat program in Hillsborough County has worked over the last several years to become more Earth-friendly.

Habitat homes are currently Energy Star rated and moving toward attaining the Builder's Challenge Green Building certification.  Builder’s Challenge is a US Department of Energy initiative that encourages home builders to construct homes that are energy efficient and durable.  Homes that meet the Builder’s Challenge requirements must rate less than a 70 on the EnergySmart Home Scale as well as address issues of building durability, indoor air quality, environmental stewardship, and occupant health, safety, and comfort.

Right now Habitat Hillsborough homes are built using Energy Star qualified windows, doors and refrigerators. Gas on-demand water heaters are used where possible to save on water heating costs. The air conditioners we use have a SEER 14 rating.  The ceiling insulation has an R30 rating, and the wall insulation has an R19 rating. All gaps around fixtures and wall sockets are sealed to prevent air leakage and energy loss.  The combination of tile throughout the home, light-colored roof shingles, and 1 ft-wide eaves works to reduce heat absorption and reduces energy costs for Habitat homeowners.  To save on building materials the studs are set at 24" rather than 16", and scrap wood is used for blocking.  Florida-friendly landscaping saves water and  is easier to maintain.

**We gladly accept donations of wood from commercial construction sites!!**

What is a Crew Leader?

Habitat Hillsborough Crew Leaders are special people.  They are volunteers who are truly dedicated to the mission of Habitat for Humanity of Hillsborough County Florida, Inc.  Our Certified Crew Leaders are trained in Habitat construction processes because they are responsible, on any given build day, for the completion and quality of specific construction tasks.  Our Crew Leader Trainer, Dick Gage, makes sure they know what they are doing.

Habitat Hillsborough builds homes, but we do it through the hands and hearts of
volunteers.  Some volunteers are highly skilled in construction.  Others are not.  They may have little or no construction experience.  Habitat Hillsborough Crew Leaders must ensure that our volunteers have a great Habitat experience.  They must also be able to teach unskilled volunteers how to accomplish the tasks needed to build homes that will not only meet all building code requirements, but will provide a solid foundation for our partner families.  Click here for a list of our Certified Crew Leaders. Thank you to all of our wonderful Crew Leaders!!  We could not build homes, build lives, and build hope in Hillsborough County without YOU!!

Do you think you have what it takes to become a Certified Crew Leader?  We recommend that you come out to volunteer with us at least once before joining a Crew Leader class.  For more information, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

OUR MISSION

Habitat for Humanity of Hillsborough County is a volunteer nonprofit, faith-based organization dedicated to providing decent, affordable housing in partnership with the community and deserving families in Hillsborough County.

At Habitat for Humanity of Hillsborough County, our focus is on showing the love of God to families in Hillsborough County by giving them a hand up, not a hand out. Habitat homebuyers must donate 500 "Sweat Equity" hours, be able to assist with closing costs, and make monthly mortgage payments. Habitat homes are sold to our homeowners at no profit with a no-interest mortgage.

We invite donors and volunteers from all walks of life to come together with our future homeowners to build relationships and to realize dreams.

Together we BUILD HOMES...BUILD LIVES...BUILD HOPE.
